By: E&P Staff Gabriel M. Cohen, who abandoned a brief pro boxing career to found the newspaper that became the National Jewish Post & Opinion, has died March 26 in Indianapolis at 98, The Indianpolis Star reported.
Born in Louisville, Ky., Cohen started a weekly Jewish paper in his hometown in 1935. Two years later, he moved the newspaper to Indianapolis when a flood ruined his office and equipment, his daughter Jennie Cohen told the Star.
Jennie Cohen is now editor and publisher of the paper, which has Indianapolis and national editions.
Cohen ran cross country and boxed at the University of North Carolina. He briefly turned professional, boxing under the name Abie Levy, the Star reported.
He remained athletic, for years jogging at the Jewish Community Center for three hours at a time, and golfing until he was 96, his daughter said.
Cohen was preceded in death in 1999 by Helen Cohen, his wife of 60 years, who wrote "A Woman's View" column in the Post & Opinion from 1946 to 1973, the Star reported. They had eight children.
