Breaking barriers: First Hispanic journalist in Puget Sound nominated as Best News Anchor for an Emmy

Posted

In a historic moment for Hispanic journalists, Paula Lamas has shattered barriers and etched her name in Emmy history.

As a trailblazer for Latina and immigrant journalists, Lamas is defying odds and making history reaching the nomination for a National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences known as NATAS Northwest Emmy Award in the coveted category of Best News Anchor, something that since Univision Seattle aired in 2007, none of the anchors (female or male) were able to do it. Lamas has broken obstacles and paved the way for others to follow in her footsteps.

Her nomination comes against the backdrop of adversity. This nomination comes after the closure of Univision Seattle, where she made significant contributions as a dedicated reporter and anchor of the only local Hispanic newscast in the entire Puget Sound for over eight years, as well as being the first Hispanic to conquer Anglo-Hispanic markets in that region of the United States. Lamas created the first movie, streaming services and entertainment segment in English for KOMO News Facebook page and translated her reports for KOMO News Weekend newscast.

Lamas' nomination is a significant milestone for Hispanic and immigrant journalists, highlighting the importance of diversity and inclusion in the media industry. Her journey to this prestigious nomination is a testament to her resilience, talent and commitment to journalism.

Her commitment to truth and authenticity resonated with the audience, making her a trusted presence during uncertain times, so she has continued reporting determined to uphold journalistic integrity.

Lamas, originally from Venezuela with Uruguayan roots, has graced television screens for over two decades. Her career spans prestigious networks such as CNN Latino Miami, CNN en Español and Fox Business News. As the female anchor at Noticias Univision Seattle, Lamas has been a voice for the Hispanic community, bridging cultures and amplifying diverse stories.

“Being the first woman, immigrant and Latina that worked for the only Hispanic newscast in Puget Sound to be nominated in more than 61 years for the EMMY in the category of Best News Anchor is a milestone and a dream come true,” Lamas shares. “This nomination fills me with pride and joy because Hispanic Journalism Matters.”

Beyond the newsroom, Lamas uses her visibility to support organizations such as The Salvation Army and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. As an Advisory Board Member, she champions causes close to her heart. Her bilingual podcast and radio show, “Power Moment with Paula Lamas,” exemplify her dedication to empowering communities.

The winner of the NATAS Northwest Emmy Award will be announced at the awards ceremony on June 1, where Lamas will join fellow nominees and industry professionals to celebrate the achievements of the past year in television and media production.
