More than 55% of independent local publishers responding to a Syracuse University study cited burnout as a concern, while approximately 52% identified balancing journalism and business operations as a pressing challenge. The research drew on 112 completed survey responses from 37 states and Washington, D.C., plus interviews with nine publishers.
The findings point to the strain of sustaining reporting while managing revenue, staffing and distribution. Researchers Merrill Brown and Jacob Spudich argue for greater access to financing, entrepreneurial training and shared expertise to help independent outlets develop sustainable businesses.
