Egyptian authorities have arrested six journalists who make up the editorial team of Matsadaash, an independent fact-checking and investigative outlet, The Associated Press reports. Authorities accused them of belonging to the outlawed Muslim Brotherhood and producing fabricated news in exchange for foreign funding.
Co-founder Abdelrahman Mansour denied the allegations and said the journalists’ families did not know where they were being held. International and regional rights groups condemned the arrests, raising concerns about the survival of independent reporting in the country.
