Canadian Printer Gets 'NYT' Contract

By: E&P Staff Montreal-based newspaper publisher and commercial printer Transcontinental Inc. Wednesday became The New York Times' first Canadian printer with the signing of a 10-year contract, exclusive of newsprint, that commences this fall.

Transcontinental's Interweb Toronto plant will print 15,000-20,000 copies of Monday through Saturday editions and 30,000-35,000 copies of the Sunday Times for the Ontario market and the regions of Buffalo and Rochester, N.Y.

Times Senior Vice President of Circulation Marc Kramer said the arrangement aims to "better serve readers, with faster, more complete service than ever before? in those markets.

Transcontinental President and CEO Luc Desjardins said the Times contract recognized his company's business model, in which new technology and a self-managed work force allow publishers to concentrate on content and take advantage of Transcontinental's production quality, color capacity, "deadline flexibility," and back-up capability through its network of print sites.

Francois Olivier, senior vice president of the newspaper group at Transcontinental Printing - Information Products, said that the deal with Times calls for it to be distributed in Ontario by the same service that delivers The Globe and Mail, also printed by Transcontinental in the same Toronto-area plant.
