An announcement from national editor Matea Gold and deputy national editor Phil Rucker:

We are delighted to announce that Cara McGoogan will be this year’s Stern-Bryan Fellow.

Cara is the first narrative audio journalist at the Telegraph in London, where she has spent the past three years writing and hosting the investigative podcast series “Bed of Lies.” The first season, “Love,” told the story of left-wing activists who were deceived into long-term relationships with men who were spying on them for the police. In the second season, “Blood,” Cara examined how tens of thousands of people were infected with HIV and hepatitis C by hemophilia medication. She is writing a book for Viking Penguin about the blood scandal.

Before moving into audio journalism, Cara was a feature writer for the Telegraph, specializing in crime and social justice, and also covered technology. Cara has won a Press Award and a British Journalism Award for her work.

The Stern-Bryan Fellowship brings a young British journalist to work at The Post for three months each year. It was established in 1979 by then-Washington Post executive editor Ben Bradlee following the death of his close friend Larry Stern, a top newsroom editor who had a fascination with all things British. In 2020, it was named the Stern-Bryan Fellowship to also honor the late Felicity Bryan, who was one of Britain’s leading literary agents and a driving force behind the fellowship.

Cara, who has a master’s degree from Columbia University, can't wait to be back in the United States as a reporter. She has never been to Washington and, stereotypically, loves English breakfast tea.

She will join us Oct. 3 and will work on the National desk, covering the 2022 midterms, challenges to the democratic process and other stories. Please join us in welcoming her.
