By: E&P Staff The Commercial Dispatch of Columbus, Miss., has made an unusually large number of comics changes -- adding seven and dropping seven others, including four comics whose original creators are now deceased.
"Zits" and "Baby Blues," which had already been in the newspaper's Sunday pages, replace "B.C." and "The Wizard of Id" in the daily pages.
Jerry Scott does "Zits" with Jim Borgman for King Features Syndicate, and Scott does "Baby Blues" with Rick Kirkman for King. "B.C." was originated by Johnny Hart and "Wizard" originated by Hart and Brant Parker, both of whom died in April. Their Creators Syndicate comics are being continued by family members.
The Commercial Dispatch also added "Doonesbury," "Flo and Friends," "F Minus," "Rubes," and "Tina's Groove." Meanwhile, it dropped "Blondie," "Dennis the Menace," "Lio," "The Elderberries," and "The Other Coast."
"Blondie" and "Dennis the Menace" are the other two comics whose originators are no longer alive. There has been much debate in the comics field about whether it's fair to have many newspaper slots filled with "legacy" strips that were passed on to other creators.
