'Chicago Tribune' Gets Video of Police Brawl

Posted
By: A published report says a tavern's security video shows an off-duty Chicago police officer holding a pistol and disrupting a pool game before a brawl breaks out. That fight led to yesterday's indictment of 3 other officers.

The Chicago Tribune says the 27-minute videotape makes it appear the officers' attack on four businessmen playing pool was unprovoked. But the officers' attorneys say the businessmen started the December 15th fight.

The videotape has not been released publicly. It has no sound and shows several camera angles.

The newspaper says the tape shows Sergeant Jeffery Planey approaching police cars apparently responding to 9-1-1 calls about the fight and the police cars beginning to leave. Thomas Needham, Planey's attorney, denies his client was trying to send the police cars away.
