By: E&P Staff Chicago Tribune officials won't comment on a published report that the 157-year-old broadsheet is developing a tabloid version.
This week's Crain's Chicago Business reports that the newspaper is "considering a tabloid version of its main edition." The front-page article by Jeremy Mullman cites two unnamed "Tribune employees who have seen working prototypes of the project."
The article does not give any further details about the project.
In Europe, many established "quality" broadsheets have converted to what they call the "compact" format, but no major U.S. daily has yet taken the plunge. When The Miami Herald was working on the major redesign launched in 2003, it commissioned a tabloid prototype, but decided to remain a broadsheet.
The Tribune moved into the tabloid business two-and-a-half years ago with the launch of RedEye, a five-day paper aimed at young readers.
