Circ Chief Ousted at Scaife Paper

By: E&P Staff Tom Stewart, the longtime editor of the Tribune-Review in Greensburg, Pa., who's quitting to go to grad school wasn't the only executive to leave the paper's ranks recently.

Lou Ottey, the paper's circulation director, was ousted last week, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Calls to the Tribune-Review were not returned by this afternoon.

Ottey told the Post-Gazette that he thinks he was forced out because of dwindling circulation numbers, especially on Sundays. The Greensburg paper dominates its sister publication in Pittsburgh, claims Ottey, who called his paper the "cash cow." The Greensburg edition subsidized the money-losing Pittsburgh paper, he said.

Ottey said that Tribune-Review Publishing Co., owned by conservative billionaire Richard Mellon Scaife, had plans that were "complicated" by the fact that Greensburg's circ was down.

According to the Audit Bureau of Circulations, the Tribune-Review has a daily circ of 108,109 and a Sunday circ of 168,295. Figures for the two papers are not broken out, but Ottey said that Greensburg's daily circ is about 53,000 and its Sunday circ is roughly 99,000.
