When Libby Averyt rolled into town in 1986 in her green Ford Pinto, the going pay for a night cops beat reporter at the Caller-Times was $250 per week.
Papers were inches wider, reporting staffs were much larger, and leadership positions were dominated by men.
Yet for all that has changed in her 28-year career, it’s what remained steadfast for Averyt that got her choked up on a watershed day in her career: Corpus Christi is still home.
The E.W. Scripps Co. on Wednesday promoted Averyt to regional publisher and chief revenue officer of the Caller-Times, effective Jan. 1.
