G/O Media has named Dan Hirschhorn, an experienced editor and digital newsroom leader, as editor in chief of Quartz, a leading business news site, effective immediately.

Hirschhorn joins Quartz most recently from The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and The Philadelphia Inquirer, where he oversaw a variety of key editorial and strategic functions at both publications. As editorial director of Barron’s, he helped lead the digital transformation of the highly influential business publication, overseeing all news and digital operations. In his role as director of news for both Time and Time Inc., he built a cross-brand publishing desk that grew digital audiences for titles that included Time, Fortune and Money.

Hirschhorn will report to Jim Spanfeller, CEO of G/O Media.

“Quartz is one of the most respected business publications in journalism today, and as we enter a very important economic year, its reporting will be more vital than ever,” said Spanfeller. “Dan’s proven track record of success will no doubt take this respected brand to new levels of editorial excellence.”

“I’m proud to become editor in chief of Quartz and excited to work with the great journalists there,” said Hirschhorn. “This is a great brand, the site is primed for growth and I’m looking forward to leading Quartz into its next chapter.”
