Announcement from Foreign Editor Douglas Jehl and Interim Deputy Foreign Editor Susan Levine:

We’re delighted to announce that David M. Herszenhorn will join The Post to become Russia and Eastern Europe editor, driving our coverage of Russia’s war against Ukraine.

David is a highly accomplished journalist with deep experience in Russia, Ukraine and across Europe. As a Moscow-based correspondent for The New York Times, he covered the Euromaidan Revolution and Russia’s 2014 invasion annexation of Crimea; most recently, as Politico Europe’s chief Brussels correspondent, he has led that publication’s coverage of efforts by the European Union and by NATO allies to arm Ukraine and isolate Russia in response to the war.

In his new role, David will remain based in Brussels, aligning his working day with our journalists responsible for covering Russia and Ukraine, including a contingent now based in Riga, Latvia, and another contingent in Kyiv, with others closer to the fighting in eastern Ukraine.

David’s extensive experience as a correspondent in Washington and overseas makes him an ideal fit for this broad, high-profile role. He spent 21 years as a reporter and correspondent for The New York Times, first in New York, then Washington as a congressional correspondent, and then as a Moscow correspondent from 2011 to 2015. At Politico Europe since 2016, he has led a team of reporters responsible for coverage of power, politics and policy in Europe and worldwide. As an associate editor, he has been part of Politico Europe’s newsroom leadership.

David grew up in Flushing, Queens, and is a graduate of Dartmouth College. He speaks Spanish and Russian; he and his wife Christina Marshall, an attorney, are the parents of three sons, two college-age and a 10-year-old. The decision to base him in Europe is part of a global expansion in which The Post is positioning more correspondents and editors in international locations to allow for faster and deeper coverage of events unfolding around the world.

David will take over full responsibility for Russia and Ukraine coverage on Aug. 29 and will spend some time in Washington getting to know the newsroom.
