By: Joe Strupp Owners of the Daytona Beach (Fla.) News-Journal have cut 39 jobs companywide, including 14 in the newsroom, the newspaper reported Wednesday.
The News-Journal Corp. said in a story that the cuts were in response to continued "disappointing advertising revenue."
"We had hoped . . . our ad performance would have started to stabilize by this time, but we have not seen any signs of improvement, yet," James Hopson, chief executive manager, said in an e-mail to employees, according to the story.
The cutbacks spanned not only the newspaper but also the company's Pennysaver publications and Complete Phone Book. Departing workers were offered a severance package that included one week's pay for each year of service, the story said.
One year ago, the News-Journal laid off 41 employees, while 98 were let go in June 2008, the paper noted. The company now has 483 employees.
