'Daytona Beach News-Journal' Photographer Simms Dies at 58

By: John "Roger" Simms, an award winning photographer for The Daytona Beach News-Journal died Thursday, the newspaper said. He was 58.

Simms, of Port Orange, died at H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa after a short battle with cancer. Shortly after learning of his death, News-Journal Editor Don Lindley was told Simms won an award in the Florida Society of Newspaper Editors annual contest.

"Roger was a dedicated, talented pro and The News-Journal certainly will miss him and his contributions to our publications," Lindley said.

Simms came to The News-Journal in May 1980 as a photojournalist. He was at the first launch of the space shuttle in April 1981 and nearly all the launches since then, the newspaper reported.

Simms is survived by his wife, Reba, their son, John, both of Port Orange, two brothers and two sisters. A memorial service was being planned.
