Debate Continues Over Animated Editorial Cartoons

By: E&P Staff Is it good that animation can now be included in the portfolios editorial cartoonists submit for Pulitzer Prize consideration? Debate over that has swirled among editorial cartoonists for weeks, and continues today on Alan Gardner's Daily Cartoonist blog.

One correspondent on the blog suggested that there be a separate Pulitzer category for animated editorial cartoons, because they're a significantly different genre than traditional still cartoons.

And Gardner noted that editorial cartoonists who do Web animation range from creators (such as 2007 Pulitzer winner Walt Handelsman) who are involved with virtually every aspect of the animation process to creators who collaborate with others as part of an animation team.

"Is the amount of involvement even considered?," asked Gardner, when it comes to whether an animating editorial cartoonist deserves to win a Pulitzer or not.
