By: E&P Staff Detroit Newspapers named as its new business development director Darrin Russell, formerly with the big ad agency Aspen Marketing.

He succeeds Richard Harshbarger, who was named vice president of market development for the joint operating agency that run business and production operations of Gannett Co.'s Detroit News and Knight Ridder's Detroit Free Press.

Henry S. Ford, vice president of market development, said Russell would concentrate on developing partnerships and sponsorships such as the Detroit Free Detroit Free Press Marathon and The Detroit News Battle of the Bands. "These are assets that offer clients attractive and well defined audiences," he said in a prepared statement. In his new role, Harshbarger will "oversee brand management and execute all marketing campaigns and events for the News and Free Press," Detroit Newspapers said.
