Did Dems Give 'NY Post' Bad Tip on Famous 'Gephardt for Veep' Scoop?

Posted
By: E&P Staff It has gone down in the books as one of the biggest flubs in recent newspaper history: A New York Post cover story in the summer of 2004 revealing that Sen. John Kerry had picked Sen. Richard A. Gephardt as his running mate.

Whoops. Less clear is how it happened.

Today the Caucus blog at www.nytimes.com reports the following.
*

A former gossip reporter at the paper, Ian Spiegelman, claims the paper was duped by Democrats, saying in a statement that the bum tip was given to Lachlan Murdoch, then the publisher of The Post. The publisher, in turn, ordered Col Allan, the editor in chief, to run the article, Mr. Spiegelman said.

?Everyone at The Post, including Col Allan and his top deputies, knew the story had been planted with Lachlan by the Democratic National Committee to make him, and The Post, appear foolish on a national level,? Mr. Spiegelman said in a statement for a potential lawsuit on an unrelated subject.

Mr. Allan said through a spokesman, ?That is simply not true.? A spokesman for the Democratic National Committee declined comment.
