By: E&P Staff E.W. Scripps Senior Vice President of Newspapers Mark Contreras has been elected chairman of the Newspaper Association of America. The association made the announcement during its annual meeting and marketing conference mediaXchange in Orlando today.
Contreras succeeds George B. Irish, vice president and eastern director of the Hearst Foundations. Irish will continue to serve on the board as an immediate past chairperson.
Contreras joined Scripps in 2005 as vice president of its newspaper operations after working as senior vice president of Pulitzer Inc. He was also president and publisher of The Times Leader in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., and has worked in management positions at The Kansas City Star and The Oakland Press in Pontiac, Mich. Contreras was also a legislative assistant to U.S. Senator Paul Simon of Illinois.
Additionally, Michael Reed, president and CEO of GateHouse Media, was elected vice chairman. James Moroney, publisher of The Dallas Morning News, was elected secretary. Robert Nutting, president and CEO The Ogden Newspapers was elected treasurer.
