By: Joe Strupp Publisher Michael Beatty of the Baltimore Examiner stood by his paper's editor, who was arrested earlier this week on gun charges, and urged others to presume innocence in the case.
Beatty, who issued a statement supporting Editor Frank Keegan late Thursday, wrote that the newsroom leader "should be afforded the presumption of innocence as the judicial process moved forward....
"Today, I talked to Frank Keegan and reviewed the police report regarding the misdemeanor arrest," Beatty's statement said. "Frank Keegan is a valued and experienced editor of the Baltimore Examiner and we stand behind him. His employment will not be affected unless warranted by future events or findings."
Keegan was arrested Wednesday night and charged with pointing a shotgun at a neighbor during a dispute over cigarette smoke, according to The Sun of Baltimore. Keegan, 58, was charged with three counts of second-degree assault and two gun violations. Police told the Sun that alleged victims were a couple and their 3-year-old daughter who live next door to Keegan.
Police have said Keegan was involved in a long-running dispute with the neighbors who had complained about cigarette smoke coming from Keegan's row house. During a confrontation on Wednesday, he allegedly pointed a gun at the neighbors when the family approached Keegan's home to confront him.
