By: E&P Staff Sheldon E. McCommon was hawking copies of the Chicago Sun-Times at his usual corner on the city's South Side when he was arrested by FBI agents Friday -- and charged with the attempted robbery of a bank on Aug. 14.
McCommon, 36, is accused of being the so-called "Orange Glove Bandit" who attempted to rob a Bank of America branch by showing a teller a note that said, "No alarms. No dye packs. I will kill you. I have a bomb," the Sun-Times reported over the weekend in an article by Rummana Hussain.
No bomb was found, and the suspect fled without getting any money.
The FBI says McCommon was recognized as a regular hawker by a member of its Violent Crimes Task Force who was reviewing surveillance photos from the bank.
He was arrested after Sun-Times officials told the FBI where he would be selling on Friday morning.
McCommon was being held without bond over the weekend. He is suspected in a successful bank robbery and another attempted bank robbery, authorities say.
