Posted
By: E&P Staff The first Mirror Awards for "the best in media industry reporting" were handed out today in Manhattan at a luncheon hosted by Meredith Vieira at the W Hotel. They are spponsored by Syracuse University's S.I Newhouse School of Public Communications.

Peter Bart, editor-in-chief of Variety, received the Lifetime Achievement Award, after an introduction by Liz Smith.

Winners were:

Best Commentary: David Carr, The New York Times, for his weekly column.

Best Coverage of Breaking Industry News: Dean Miller for his Nieman Reports article, "A Local Newspaper Endures a Stormy Backlash."

Best Single Article: Clive Thompson for his New York magazine article, "Blogs to Riches."

Best Profile: Philip Weiss, also for New York, "A Guy Named Craig" (that would be, Newmark).

Overall Excellence: American Journalism Review.

Excellence in Media Information Services: HealthNewsReview.org, from the University of Minnesota.

Best Subject-Related Series: Andreas Kluth of The Economist for "Among the Audience: A Survey of New Media."

Joe Strupp of E&P was one of three finalists for this award for his 2006 series on the Web/print transition, "Mixing, Matching and Multi-Media."

Esther Dyson and Floyd Abrams also were presenters, along with David M. Rubin, dean of the Newhouse School.

Dean Miller, winner in the breaking news category, is executive editor of the Post Register in Idaho Falls, Idaho. E&P editor Greg Mitchell wrote a column about Miller's winning article last year and it also inspired a feature written by Strupp earlier this year.

Liz Smith said in introducing Bart, that he was like Dorian Gray, never changing. She added: "When they give you a Lifetime Achievement it usually means you are all washed up, but not in the case of Peter Bart."

Bart joked that Variety has been around for 102 years "and I have only been editor for 95 years." (Actually it has been less than 20.) He took special pride in pointing out that despite all the excitement around the Web, "our publication is still making a lot of money in print and doing pretty damn good."
