By: Mark Fitzgerald The founder and a former editor of Southern Voice intend to launch a new paper to replace the gay weekly that folded when Window Media shut down and filed for Chapter 7 liquidation last week.
On the Web site www.savesovo.com, Southern Voice's last editor, Laura Douglas-Brown, said she and Southern Voice founder Chris Cash are planning a new print and online newspaper that will be a "community-owned, community-led LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) news outlet that focuses on reporting LGBT issues in Atlanta and beyond."
Douglas-Brown said she had been speaking "intensely all week" with Cash since the gay chain Window shut down all business operations. "She sold the paper in 1997, had reached out to try to help save it as Window Media fell apart, and didn't get the chance," Douglas-Brown said of Cash. "Now we want to work together to make sure our community's Voice -- many voices, really -- is not silenced."
Douglas-Brown said a community meeting will be convened next week that will, among other things, seek to establish a name for the new publication. "We know we can't really save SoVo -- that name now belongs to a bankruptcy court and lienholders -- but we can save SoVo's mission," she wrote.
"As of today, we have a mailbox, a bank account and a domain name -- www.savesovo.com -- that mark the official public start of our efforts," Douglas-Brown added.
