By: E&P Staff Former Atlanta Journal-Constitution staffer Moni Basu has won the 2009 Joseph Galloway Award for Distinguished Reporting, the top prize in the annual Military Reporters & Editors (MRE) journalism contest.
Basu, who currently works for CNN, won for her eight-part series titled "Chaplain Turner's War," which ran in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution in 2008. Judges said the series was "quiet and moving" as she portrayed the burdens of war, both emotional and physical, through the story of a 35-year-old chaplain and the soldiers of Bravo Company.
She will receive a $500 cash award sponsored by The McClatchy Co. Basu was lauded for reporting "sensitively on the damage war does to soldiers' marriages and to their faith, even to the faith of a chaplain."
Also honored by the judges was Jenn Rowell of The Montgomery (Ala.) Advertiser, for her series of stories on officer training at Maxwell Air Force Base.
