By: E&P Staff Robert Beatty, who was The Miami Herald's general counsel and vice president of public affairs for seven years, has bought the black-oriented weekly The Broward Times in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., from Keith Clayborne.
The sale, first reported Thursday in a Herald article by Ina Paiva Cordle, closed two weeks ago. Beatty told the Herald he paid "more than $1 million" for the weekly, which has a paid circulation of about 21,000.
Beatty brought in two Miami Herald veterans. Brad Bennett, a former Herald editor, is the executive editor, and Mia Sanks is advertising manager.
With its next issue, which hits the streets Friday, the price of the paper is doubling to 50 cents.
There are plans to redesign, and add pages to include sections on business, sports, religion, and health, Beatty told the Herald.
Beatty, 55, lost his position at the Herald when it was bought by the McClatchy Co., which consolidated the chain's legal work at its Sacramento headquarters.
