Former Newsday Editor Les Payne Dies at 76

Longtime Newsday journalist Les Payne, a Pulitzer Prize winner who was a champion for racial equality, died unexpectedly Monday night at his home in Harlem, his family said. He was 76.

“He appreciated the people who appreciated him: the readers. They were the ones that he enjoyed writing for, and I appreciate them reading him,” his wife, Violet, said Tuesday.
