Former Shaw Newspapers Chairman Dies at 84

By: E&P Staff The former chairman and scion of Shaw Newspapers, Eustace K. "E.K." Shaw, died Friday in Newton, Iowa. He was 84.

According to the Kane County, Ill., The Chronicle, Shaw started his career in newspapers when he was 11 in 1936 as a "flyboy" at The Telegraph in Dixon, Ill. His duties included taking newspapers off the press, melting lead and sweeping up metal from under the linotype.

After serving in the Naval Air Corps, Shaw graduated from DePauw University in Greencastle, Ind., where he was a member of the Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity.

In 1948 he moved to Newton, where he would serve as publisher of the Newton Daily News. He was chairman of the board of Shaw Newspapers from 1993 until 2003.

Shaw is survived by his wife, Nancy, his sons William E. Shaw, the publisher of Sauk Valley Newspapers, and Robert A. Shaw; grandchildren Charles Shaw, Meredith Shaw, Michael Shaw, and William Shaw; and his sister Janet Loring.
