By: Robert Foster, publisher of Foster's Daily Democrat in Dover, N.H., has died. He was 88.

Foster died Thursday evening at his home.

Gov. John Lynch said he was impressed by how much Foster wanted to maintain a family-owned newspaper that puts such emphasis on reporting local news.

Former Gov. John Sununu, now chairman of the New Hampshire Republican Committee, said Foster was a dear friend. He said Foster always asked good, pointed questions in editorial board interviews with presidential candidates.

Foster's love for his community was often expressed very quietly through private donations and charitable gifts. Rose Marie Reese, former principal of St. Mary's Academy, said Foster and his wife, Therese, bought a building in 1997 and donated it to the school. It now houses an early childhood learning center.
