By: E&P Staff Retiring New York Times columnist William Safire turned down a chance to succeed Daniel Okrent as the paper?s public editor, according to a report in the Washington, D.C., newspaper The Hill. Okrent?s term is up later this year.
The Hill attributed the report to ?Times insiders? and said the offer came from Publisher Arthur O. Sulzberger Jr.
At a retirement party for Safire in Washington on Monday, the columnist told the Hill that the Times? John Tierney is frequently mentioned as a candidate to take over his op-ed slot. He also joked that the presence of Sulzberger and Washington Post Co. Chairman Donald Graham at the party proved that bipartisanship was actually alive and well in D.C.
