By: Gannett Co. is cutting 26 newsroom jobs at its flagship USA Today newspaper and 11 positions at USA Weekend magazine.
The cuts were revealed Tuesday in company memos. It was not immediately clear what percentage of the work force the positions represent.
USA Today and other Gannett newspapers have already tried to cut costs with layoffs and furloughs over the past year. USA Today has been hit especially hard by the advertising slump and a decline in travel, which knocked it out of the No. 1 position in U.S. newspaper circulation. USA Today sells many of its copies in hotels and airports.
Other media companies have been shedding workers as well. The New York Times, The Associated Press and Time Inc. have announced job cuts in recent weeks.
