By: E&P Staff Goss International, based in Bolingbrook, Ill., received another order from the Gannett Co. for Uniliner towers. The latest is for two towers for its Goss Metro press at the 66,409-circulation Reno (Nevada) Gazette-Journal to meet growing demand for color.
Two weeks ago Gannett said it will install Uniliner towers on its press in Melbourne, Fla. (E&P Online, Jan. 28).
Reno's tower additions will almost double the plant's color capacity, enabling it to print quality back-to-back four-color work, with minimum investment. When installation is complete, in September, the press will be able to print 56 pages of full color in an 80-page publication, up from 24 color pages.
Gazette-Journal Production Manager Beth Ptak said the
investment was expected to boost capacity by 40%, all in four-color positions. "A key factor to consider," she said, was that Uniliner towers would require no building modifications.
The Gazette-Journal also plans to upgrade to the Goss Digital Inking System this spring and add a new Goss press control system to maximize productivity on its Metro and new towers. The digital inking's high level of density control produces superior print quality with significantly lower waste, according to Goss.
"In the short term, we hope to enjoy greater productivity with less waste and lower set-up time on our existing work," said Publisher Fred Hamilton. "In the long term, we expect that the investment will create wider opportunities for us in the newspaper market, as well as allowing us to reach further into the commercial contract market."
