By: OSKAR GARCIA The Henderson Home News and Boulder City News told readers on Thursday that they planned to suspend weekly publication as part of broader cuts by Greenspun Media Group that have affected its television and Web coverage.
The neighborhood newspapers in southern Nevada told readers that the Thursday editions they were reading would be the last ones until further notice.
A Greenspun Media Group spokeswoman did not immediately respond to telephone messages.
The company said in a statement that its advertising revenues have dropped significantly during the past 18 months.
"Given the present environment, we sadly have no choice but to take a break from the community newspaper business," Bruce Deifik, president of the Greenspun Corp., said in a statement. "We apologize to our communities for the suddenness of this news, and we hope our many loyal readers will now turn to our Web sites and our other outstanding publications for their news needs."
The cuts come after Greenspun earlier made separate decisions to cancel two television programs, "News One at 9 p.m." and "702.tv."
Both aired locally in the Las Vegas market and 702.tv had a multimedia Web site.
Greenspun said in a statement that employees would be placed elsewhere within the organization if possible, but provided no details on layoffs.
The privately held Greenspun Corp. publishes the Las Vegas Sun newspaper under a joint operating agreement with the city's other daily newspaper, the Las Vegas Review-Journal, owned by Stephens Media LLC. The agreement means the competing newspapers are delivered together to subscribers and newsstands.
Greenspun, based in the Las Vegas suburb of Henderson, also publishes magazines, runs the travel Web site Vegas.com and has investments in casinos and real estate.
