Greenspun Media Re-Organizes in Las Vegas, Announces Layoffs, Shifts 'Sun'

By: The Greenspun Media Group has reorganized most of its operations under one roof in a cost-cutting move, laying off an unspecified number of workers Tuesday while merging the editorial units of eight news outlets into a single team.

The privately-held company combined the editorial, online, advertising, marketing, production, human resources and finance departments for the Las Vegas Sun newspaper, its Web site and other outlets.

It said the single unit will work closely with the company's luxury magazine division and its two television outlets.

Greenspun said the move included layoffs, but did not specify how many. The moves are the latest in broader cuts that have affected the company's newspaper, television and Web coverage. The company has said its advertising revenue has dropped significantly since 2008.

Brian Greenspun, chairman of Greenspun Corp. and editor of the Las Vegas Sun, said the company regrets the cuts and is grateful for the workers' contributions over the years.

"But we must face up to both the challenges and the opportunities of the world we're living in," Greenspun said in a statement. "We feel it's time to unite our media into a more progressive and audience-driven model."

The company said that as part of its restructuring, a unified sales team will give advertisers looking for room on multiple platforms several options.

"Our new sales structure, which will be in place shortly, will converge all of our product lines and make us better able to serve all our customers," said Bruce Deifik, Greenspun Corp. president. "We believe this restructuring will put us in the forefront of media companies as we move through and out of this recession."

Greenspun in late October suspended weekly publication of the Henderson Home News and Boulder City News, and earlier canceled two television programs, "News One at 9 p.m. and "702.tv." The newspapers served their respective Las Vegas suburbs, while the television programs aired locally. The 702.tv unit had a multimedia Web site, as well.

Greenspun Corp. publishes the Las Vegas Sun newspaper under a joint operating agreement with the city's other daily newspaper, the Las Vegas Review-Journal, owned by Stephens Media LLC. The agreement means the competing newspapers are delivered together to subscribers and newsstands.

Greenspun, based in Henderson, also publishes magazines, runs the travel Web site Vegas.com and has investments in casinos and real estate.
