The Groesbeck Journal, a top Texas county seat weekly newspaper founded in 1892, has been sold by long time owner Thomas E. Hawkins and the Hawkins family.
New owner is Jim Moser/Limestone County Publishing, LP. The market served by the Journal has a stable and bright future. Centrally located between Houston, Dallas and Austin, the growing Groesbeck economy benefits from agriculture, lignite mining nearby and small manufacturing companies.
Moser is a respected Texas publisher who owns nearby newspapers in Mexia and Fairfield.
The Journal serves most of Limestone County and has no competition in Groesbeck. Its paid circulation is over 3,000. It had been owned by members of the Hawkins family since 1930, when it was purchased by Jack Hawkins, father of Thomas Hawkins.
The highly regarded Groesbeck School District covers 530 square miles and includes several incorporated cities and a new power plant in the southeastern part of the district. The Hawkins family was represented by Ted Rickenbacher of Rickenbacher Media.
