Guardian Australia editor Katharine Viner has described charging for online content as "utterly antithetical to the open web" while acknowledging newspapers were "all trying to survive" the shift in consumption habits from print to digital.
Delivering the AN Smith Lecture at the University of Melbourne's Centre for Advancing Journalism last night, Viner said it was too early, economically, to rule out the idea of newspaper paywalls.
