From Hilary Fung, deputy creative director for Graphics and Engineering:

The San Francisco Chronicle is excited to announce that Harsha Devulapalli is joining the staff as a graphics reporter.

Devulapalli recently completed a graduate degree in data journalism at Columbia University. Previously, as a developer at Mint (HT Media) in India, he pitched and produced hundreds of data stories and interactive graphics.

“I'm excited to work with the team to produce some stellar graphics and maps that can help us deepen our understanding of the region,” Devulapalli said. “I'm particularly interested in covering problems of access, equity, and justice.”

Devulapalli is the second reporter this year to join an expanding graphics and engineering team led by Deputy Creative Director Hilary Fung.

“Harsha has his nose on some of the most important and interesting issues affecting our readers and our communities,” Fung said. “I’m excited about his ability to go deep on a complicated topic and turn it into an approachable visual story.”

“Harsha was creating compelling digital stories and graphics before he went back to school. Now, with even more training in investigative reporting, data gathering techniques and analysis and visualization, he will help The Chronicle newsroom approach storytelling in new ways,” said Creative Director Danielle Mollette-Parks.
