By: E&P Staff The Racine, Wis., city council approved an expansion of The Journal Times' downtown headquarters yesterday. Council members approved the expansion despite protests from preservationists concerned about a historic firehouse on the site of the paper's headquarters.
The council cited the necessity of maintaining downtown business as the reason for the vote. The Journal Times threatened to move its offices if denied the right to demolish the fire station. But the council asked that the newspaper "take all steps reasonably possible to preserve and maintain the existing facility." If the firehouse must be demolished, the council requested that the Journal Times preserve its tower as a monument to Racine's firefighters.
In previous statements, newspaper spokespeople have said that maintaining the building is impossible. But last night Publisher Richard Johnston said that the newspaper was committed to preserving the fire station's tower or building a new one.
