By: E&P Staff To produce an XML-based online edition of the paper, The Kansas City (Mo.) Star is using ActivePaper Daily from Israel's Olive Software, which has U.S. offices in Santa Clara, Calif.
The McClatchy daily hopes the interactive electronic replica of the print edition will boost circulation numbers and offer readers an opportunity to click through to advertisers and create customized versions of the paper.
"The reason that the Kansas City Star and other papers use Olive is that we give them the opportunity to monetize their content," says Olive Marketing Manager Peter Spielvogel.
The software allows a paper to create a homogeneous XML archive of content, regardless of input format, and then repurpose that content, which can be "introduced from PDFs, old newspapers, microfilm, microfiche, and ... converted to XML with fully searchable metatags, such as byline, editor, full text searching, section, and date," Spielvogel says.
XML content can then be used to create different products, such as a public archive, sponsored publications, commemorative editions, and education projects, or to populate other vehicles, such as Web sites and other electronic distribution channels, according to Spielvogel.
