By: Joe Strupp The Boston Globe's Web site, Boston.com, had its second-busiest month in history in August, fueled primarily by the recent coverage of Sen. Edward M. Kennedy's death and funeral, according to David Beard, Boston.com editor.
He said the Web site drew some 213.5 million page views in August, with some 20 million for the Kennedy-related material. Kennedy died at 77 on Aug. 25.
Kennedy's sister, Eunice Kennedy Shriver, also died last month, on Aug. 11.
"The bulk of it was in the last eight days of the month," said Beard. "Those last eight days did it." The Web site drew more than 10 million page views on both Aug. 26 and Aug. 31, he added. Other days during the past week averaged between 8 million and 9 million page views.
He said the Web site's highest monthly total came in October 2007, when the Boston Red Sox won the World Series, drawing some 232 million page views.
In addition, the Web site ran its first-ever live video feed on the home page on Saturday during Kennedy's memorial service and funeral, Beard said: "We had not had a video player directly on our homepage itself."
