By: E&P Staff Randall Shew, publisher of the Richmond (Ky.) Register from 1970 until 1990, died Tuesday, his paper reported. He was 80.
Under Shew, the Register relocated from a site it occupied since 1917, according to his son, David. Shew bought and oversaw the renovation of a former Richmond Coca-Cola bottling plant, which accommodated expanded presses and subsequent color printing.
"Dad was first in Kentucky to put out a weekly advertising publication along with a daily newspaper," David Shew told the Register. "Advertisers could run ads in both the Register and the Post-Advertiser (now the Madison County Advertiser) and saturate the Madison County market with their message."
Before coming to Richmond, Shew was publisher of a daily in Hopewell, Va., and ad manager of his hometown daily in Gadsden, Ala.
Active in church and civic affairs, Shew was a strong supporter of the local United Way, which he helped start in the 1970s. He is survived by his wife, four children and three grandchildren.
