By: Jim Rosenberg In preparation for this year's major capital expansion at its suburban Chicago print site, the Los Angeles-based Korea Daily News installed one of the first PlateRite News newspaper CTP solutions from Screen (USA) of Rolling Meadows, Ill.
The Korean-language paper sought consistency and predictability in computer-to-plate output. "The PlateRite News was in full production outputting thermal plates within a week of installation," said Elk Grove operations General Manager Daniel Um, adding that "the PlateRite News is much easier to operate than a filmsetter."
One of five U.S. print sites for the paper, the paper's Elk Grove Village, Ill., location circulates 20,000 copies among readers in the upper Midwest. The Korea Daily News produces four 20- to 24-page broadsheet sections, six days a week. Per-section page counts will increase to 28 pages when a new Goss Community four-high tower press goes into operation this year. The print sites also do commercial work for 11 newspapers owned by seven companies.
The 35-plate-per-hour machine was introduced at the Nexpo trade show last June (E&P, Sept. 2004). "You can be sure that we'll be coming out with platesetters at higher speeds in the future," Screen (USA) spokesman Michael S. DeLong said earlier this week. PlateRite's design for newspaper CTP relies on Grating Light Valve (GLV) imaging technology, with 512-channel laser diode imaging heads.
The Daily News also installed Screen's AM/FM hybrid Spekta screening, with which Um said the paper achieves "higher quality and better image detail ... even on small photographs. It takes less ink to get these high results, so the pages are cleaner on the fingers."
