Let's Go Surfing: New Newspapers on the 'Net

Posted
By: Steve Outing

I've been spending a lot of time recently updating the Online Newspaper Services Resource Directory, a database of newspaper new media activity that I maintain for Editor & Publisher Interactive. So many new entries have appeared that I thought it would be worthwhile to offer up a list of the newspapers that have come online in the last 1-1/2 months. On the Web alone, they number 95. (Can you spell "herd instinct"?)

The list below includes all the newspaper services that have appeared on the World Wide Web in that short time period. Very few newspaper deals with the commercial online services have turned up on my radar screen. Microsoft Network has signed up USA Today and the Seattle Times, and America Online last summer signed a deal with Phoenix Newspapers (the Arizona Republic and Phoenix Gazette). All of those papers are simultaneously running Web sites. Also, in Europe we will soon see a number of newspapers announcing deals with Europe Online and Bertelsmann Online.

As you might expect, there are some excellent new online ventures in this list, and there are some examples of what not to do online. You're on your own today. Happy Web surfing!

(By the way, some of these sites are still "under construction" and have not officially launched yet.)

To see the full list of more than 500 online newspaper services worldwide, visit Editor & Publisher Interactive and click on "Online Newspapers." This is the most comprehensive listing available worldwide of newspaper activity in the new media sector.

(As fast as the online newspaper services business is growing, it's just about impossible for anyone to keep up. While I believe my list to be comprehensive, I'm sure I've missed a few. If your paper has an online service announced recently that is not on the above list or in the master database, please send me a note with the following information: Newspaper name; Service name; Address/URL/dial-up number; Contact name, phone and email; General/public email address; Online ad rates; Date launched; Brief description of service. Thank you!)
