By: (AP) Funeral services were held yesterday for Ashley B. Futrell, editor and publisher emeritus of the Washington Daily News.
Futrell died Friday at the age of 93 after a brief illness.
He received numerous awards from the North Carolina Press Association, including recognition for best editorials. His greatest honor in journalism came in 1990, when the Daily News won the Pulitzer Prize for Meritorious Public Service.
After serving in the Army during World War II, he returned to a job as a tobacco buyer for Imperial Tobacco Company. Having been posted during his final months in Europe with an Army newspaper, he began working in the off-season as a reporter for the Wilson Daily Times.
Futrell became editor and publisher of the Washington Daily News in late 1949. In 1982, Futrell became the editor and publisher emeritus of the newspaper.
His son joined the Daily News in 1978 as its general manager before becoming president and publisher in 1982.
