By: The managing editor of the Opelika-Auburn News in Alabama has been named publisher of the Culpeper Star-Exponent, the newspapers' parent company announced Monday.

Media General's Publishing Division said Mitch Sneed will assume his new duties June 4. Sneed will set strategy and oversee all aspects of the Star-Exponent and Culpeper News operations, which are part of Media General's Northern Virginia Community Newspaper Group.

He succeeds C. Kirk Read, who was promoted to regional publisher.

"We're thrilled that Mitch has agreed to bring his energy, optimism and years of media experience to the Culpeper community," Read said.

Sneed has been managing editor of the Opelika-Auburn News since 2003. In that time, the newspaper received more than 215 journalism awards and was twice named the state's best newspaper by the Alabama Press Association.

"I've never claimed to be the smartest guy in the world, but there aren't too many people who outwork me," Sneed said. "Luckily, I was blessed with a staff and a publisher who work just as hard."

Media General publishes 22 daily newspapers -- including The Tampa Tribune, Richmond Times-Dispatch and Winston-Salem Journal -- and more than 150 weekly newspapers and other publications. The company also owns 23 network-affiliated television stations.
