By: Mike Shields MSNBC.com has acquired EveryBlock, a startup news site which purports to report and aggregate on a hyperlocal level. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
The Chicago, Ill.-based company was built via a two-year grant it received from the journalism supporting group The Knight Foundation in July 2007. Since then, EveryBlock has built a suite of digital tools designed to serve news junkies interested in the latest goings on in their particular neighborood ? and even specific street ? by pulling together articles, local blogs, user-generated content such as photos and civic data (such as police and crime statistics). According to a description on the site, ?We?re a geographic filter ? a 'news feed' for your neighborhood, or, yes, even your block.?
To date, EveryBlock offers content on 15 different cities, including New York, Atlanta, Boston, Charlotte, Los Angeles and Miami. MSNBC.com officials said that the site will continue to operate as an independent brand but will also be used to enhance MSNBC.com?s own local coverage. ?At a time when traditional news coverage of local government has declined under severe economic pressure, EveryBlock has emerged as a scalable solution to reporting basic public information,? said MSNBC.com president Charlie Tillinghast.
