By: E&P Staff The National Society of Newspaper Columnists (NSNC) has announced that its fourth annual Will Rogers Writing Contest is open, effective today.
Entrants are asked to submit an essay of 500 to 750 words in the style of Will Rogers, the famous humorist who wrote a syndicated column for the McNaught Syndicate from 1922 until his death in a plane crash in 1935.
Entrants "may write on a current or timeless topic, such as government and politics, social or cultural trends, home and family, education, personalities, and so on," according to the NSNC's announcement. Entries must be original work and be accompanied by the author's name, mailing address and e-mail address on a separate page.
The deadline for entry is Oct. 1. Winners will be announced Nov. 1. First prize is $200, with $100 and $50 awarded to second and third-place finishers. Entries will be judged by Steven Gragert, executive director of the Will Rogers Museum. Last year, first prize was awarded to California freelance columnist George Waters.
Entries can be submitted by e-mail to willrogersok@gmail.com. The words "Will Rogers Writing Contest" must be included in the subject line.
