N.C. Supreme Court Sides with Newspaper on 911-Tapes Case

By: (AP) The state Supreme Court has ruled that tapes of a 911 call during a fatal North Charleston police shooting almost five years ago should have been released to a newspaper under the state's Freedom of Information Act.

The high court's ruling Monday helps determine how much public information police and prosecutors have to release to the public during investigations.

The court ruled the public had a right to the tapes even though the city of North Charleston argued the tapes were evidence. Attorneys for The Post and Courier newspaper say the recordings might have provided insight into why a local prosecutor chose not to charge officers after the shooting.
