News/Media Alliance President and CEO Danielle Coffey is urging California lawmakers to pass Assembly Bill 2222, arguing in a new San Francisco Chronicle op-ed that the measure would give publishers essential help retaining and employing local journalists.
Coffey writes that shrinking advertising revenue, declining search traffic and AI systems that scrape and resell news content are intensifying the financial pressure on publishers. With E&P having previously reported on the legislation, her commentary adds a prominent industry voice to the debate as AB 2222 moves through Sacramento. “If California wants to preserve local journalism,” Coffey writes, “it should help publishers afford to employ local journalists.”
