Rest of World is exploring a new institutional home while preparing to end standalone publication at the end of January 2027, according to Semafor. Founder and principal backer Sophie Schmidt outlined the plans in a message to donors as discussions about a possible merger continue.
The nonprofit, launched in 2020 to cover technology beyond the Western world, is also planning for a potential wind-down. Semafor reports that weakening search and social traffic, alongside changes in how audiences find information, have complicated its prospects. A merger remains possible; the outlet has not already closed.
