Next Monday is National Columnists Day

Posted
By: Dave Astor The annual National Columnists Day, which began 10 years ago, will be marked again on April 18.

It was on April 18, 1945 -- 60 years ago -- that columnist Ernie Pyle was killed by Japanese machine-gun fire while covering World War II.

The idea for a National Columnists Day came from former National Society of Newspaper Columnists President Bill Tammeus of The Kansas City (Mo.) Star and Knight Ridder/Tribune News Service. Columnist Dave Lieber of the Fort Worth (Texas) Star-Telegram suggested the April 18 date.

CORRECTION, April 13: An earlier version of this story incorrectly stated that Pyle was killed by a sniper.
